The Granville Brothers' Gee Bee racing aircraft |

Aircraft racing competition became popular in the
20s and 30s, stimulating the design and construction of ever faster craft.
The Granville Brothers had a small operation, whose most famous craft
is this Gee Bee, in which Jimmy Doolittle set a 1932 record of 294 mph.
The Schneider Trophy was set up in 1912 for seaplane races of at least
150 nautical miles. Supermarine aircraft won the Trophy, as they learned
to design and construct fast craft, which they used to produce the famous
RAF Spitfire. |
